General:
Perennial, tufted grass often with decumbent bases; stems slender, erect, 20-40 cm tall.
Leaves:
Sheaths smooth, overlapping, the lower ones compressed; blades flat, crowded along the lower part of the stem, 1-2 mm wide; ligules about 0.5 mm long, finely jagged.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a loose, open, oblong panicle, 7-20 cm long, 10-40 mm wide, the branches and flower stalks hairlike; spikelets dark purplish, 1- (rarely 2-) flowered, about 1-1.5 mm long; glumes 0.4-0.6 mm long, short-pointed, scarcely half as long as the spikelets; lemmas short-pointed, faintly 3-nerved, 1-1.2 mm long, unawned; paleas lanceolate, smooth, 0.3-0.4 mm long; anthers 0.3-0.4 mm long, purplish.

Cranberry bogs in the lowland zone; rare in SW BC, known recently from Delta and Richmond; introduced from E North America.
